This international diploma course teaches participants the 15 principles of sustainable construction.

They cover the design, planning and construction of buildings that are both energy efficient and comfortable. Practical solutions for social building, schools and universities are presented. The 120-hour digital course includes online sessions, practice-based examples from around the world, teaching videos, team activities and case studies.

The course contents are based on the principles of the CEELA project
and were developed in close cooperation with UNAM – Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico and other renowned universities such as ETH Zurich, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the National University of Singapore and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. In total, 3,500 participants from Latin America have already successfully completed the course, and received a certificate from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

The course is free of charge and is offered as part of the CEELA project and financed by SDC (www.proyectoceela.com).

 

Learning objectives

  • Understanding the advantages of energy-efficient construction with comfort.
  • Understanding the fundamental concepts, requirements and main measures for the realization of buildings according to the 15 principles of CEELA.
  • Ability to analyze buildings according to the 15 principles of CEELA.
  • Ability to holistically evaluate and select design criteria, materials and technologies for efficient construction. Particular attention is paid to the overall cost-effectiveness of the project as well as the efficiency of the operation, monitoring and maintenance.

Module 1: Basic concepts

Module 2: Integrated planning

  • Method and tools for the integrated planning and design of sustainable building projects
  • Consideration of environmental factors, social aspects and cost-effectiveness for sustainable construction

Module 3: Architecture and construction

  • Sustainable architecture principles and techniques for net zero buildings
  • Selection and implementation of environmentally-friendly building materials and technologies

Module 4: Technology

  • Use of innovative technologies to achieve net zero buildings
  • Energy efficiency, renewable energies and smart building technologies

Module 5: Operation, maintenance and monitoring

  • Strategies for the operation, maintenance and monitoring of net zero buildings
  • Monitoring systems and measures for continuous improvement of the buildings
