What is an LWS?
A Local Water Strategy (LWS) is a municipal management and planning tool that enables a more efficient and sustainable use of water, developed through a multisectoral diagnostic process and the collective definition of a water vision or objective for the community. This is achieved through participatory processes to create a portfolio of projects and strategic partnerships, whose subsequent implementation will be funded based on prioritization criteria.
The goal is to establish a governance model within municipalities, led by a Municipal Water Manager, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the collectively defined roadmap.
This LWS program addresses territorial needs and guides local-scale solutions, supporting municipalities in advancing their local climate change action plans, as stipulated by the Climate Change Framework Law.
At the end of this program, each of the 30 municipalities will have a water roadmap that aligns with and respects the unique characteristics of its territory, while also being coordinated and integrated at the Maipo basin level to advance towards sustainable and integrated water management on a regional scale.
